Police Officers

Qualifications:

  • 21 years of age
  • U.S. Citizen or permanent alien who is eligible and has applied for U.S. citizenship prior to application for employment
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Possess or be able to acquire a valid Georgia driver's license by the time of hire
  • No felony convictions. No diversions or expungements or conviction in any court for any felony drug-related offense. No pending criminal action in any court and must not be under investigation for any criminal offense by any criminal justice agency
  • No evidence of deception or subterfuge demonstrated during the pre-employment process. Applicants who do not meet this qualifier may have their files reviewed on a case-by-case basis at the Police Chief's discretion
  • No family violence crime(s) convictions
  • No convictions of misdemeanor crimes of violence, or use of physical force or threat thereof during the previous two (2) years
  • No convictions of misdemeanor property crimes within the past two (2) years
  • No more than two (2) moving violation convictions or being at fault in more than two accidents during the past 12 months. No more than seven (7) points accumulated against driving record at the time of departmental interview

The following additional minimum standards involve activities which may to date have been unreported to or undetected by law enforcement, but which will result in disqualification if discovered during the employment processor thereafter:

  • No undetected illegal drug possession or use during the past two years
  • No illegal distribution or sale of any drug
  • No undetected crimes involving morals charges
  • No undetected commissions of misdemeanor crimes of violence or use of physical force or threat thereof during the past two years

Testing and Processing:

After successfully passing the written exams and physical agility test, a thorough background investigation including a polygraph will be conducted. Applicants will then have to pass a psychological examination, employment physical, and drug screening process. Failure of any of these tests will result in disqualification.

Training:

    • Initial training consists of a 10-week academy class at the Northeast Georgia Police Academy.
    • Upon completion of training at the academy, recruits will receive an additional 7 weeks of advanced graduate training at the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
    • Recruits will then be assigned to a Police Training Officer (PTO) for "hands on" training that will last a minimum of 15 weeks.
    • Each officer must complete 20 hours of advanced training each year to maintain POST certification.
    • The probationary period for newly hired officers is 12 months.

Salary

The starting salary for police officers is $32,116. After six months, this increases to $33,277; after one year it increases to $34,438. In addition, there are also specific incentives offered to police officers for a maximum increase in salary of $2400 (above the $32,116 basic entry rate). These incentives are as follows:

  • College baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university: $2400 salary increase
  • Four years of active-duty military service: $1200 salary increase
  • Three years of active-duty military service: $900 salary increase
  • Two years of active-duty military service: $600 salary increase
  • Already Possess Georgia Peace Officer Certification Prior to Employment with ACCPD: $1200 salary increase

In addition, a total of $3,000 will be offered as a hiring incentive to be paid in $1,000 increments: $1,000 for completion of a satisfactory job performance after 3 months, another $1,000 after 6 months, and the last $1,000 increment with final completion of a satisfactory job performance after 12 months of employment.

Vacation and Holiday Leave

Employees earn 9 paid holidays per year.

Vacation is earned from the date of employement, but may not be taken during the first six months of service. Vacation time earned is based upon the number of years of service with the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government.

Sick Leave

Sick leave is earned at the rate of 8 hours per month. Leave may be used after one month of service.

Military Leave

Employees who are members of a National Guard or military reserve unit are permitted up to 18 paid days of military leave per year.
