Officers of the Athens-Clarke County Police Departments bike patrol recently conducted a bicycle rodeo in the parking lot of Pan Am Grocery at Nellie B and Vine for children in the Nellie B Housing area. A number of children participated in events, which included balancing on the bicycle, control on a serpentine course, and control in a 10 cone square. All children who participated received water bottles and two bicycles were given away. The water bottles were donated by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. The bicycles were donated by the Department of Family and Children Services. Bicycle patrol officers who participated were SPO Derrick Scott, SPO Brian Michaelis and SPO Adam Matthews. SPO Tracey Hardigree, of Parking Enforcement, also participated. Sergeant Nick Aguilar, who coordinated the event, expressed his appreciation for the officers dedication. He said They worked until 4:00 a.m. and then came out at 9:00 a.m. to help educate the children about bicycle safety.
