Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS):

What is CrimeReports.com? CrimeReports.com is an online mapping and analysis service provided by Public Engines, Inc. CrimeReports.com combines the value of police data with the ease-of-use of Google-based mapping and an analytics module so that members of the public can view police data in a high-impact map or summary descriptive format. Members of the public may also sign up to receive free email alerts based on user-defined parameters (e.g., geography, crime types, frequency, etc.). The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has partnered with CrimeReports.com in an effort to bolster the partnership between the police and the public that we serve. We hope that will build a stronger partnership by improving communication about where and when criminal incidents occur in our community.

What type of Athens-Clarke Count Police Department (ACCPD) data is used by CrimeReports.com? The CrimeReports.com service utilizes records management system (RMS) data from ACCPD. The ACCPD RMS is a highly specialized computer system that allows for the tracking of criminal incidents reported by citizens and ACCPD police officers.

The following Uniform Crime Report (UCR) Part I incidents are submitted to CrimeReports.com: Murder, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Larceny-Theft, and Motor Vehicle Theft. In an effort to protect the identity of victims of sexual assault, UCR Part I rapes are not included in the data submitted to CrimeReports.com. Unfounded incidents, incidents that were determined after investigative effort to not have occurred as they were reported, are not included.

ACCPD submits the following data fields to CrimeReports.com: report date, incident address, incident identifier, offense date, and department title.

Is there a description for the data fields displayed by CrimeReports.com? Yes:

  • Report Date: This is the date that the event was reporte to ACCPD. Some criminal incident may be reported many days after the event actually occured.
  • Incident Address: This is the 100th block address of the incident location. CrimeReports.com translates address data into block level data. This means that if an incident occurs at 123 Main Street, it will show up as 100 Block Main Street in the CrimeReports.com application. Some location fields will be populated with "address could not be mapped" if the data was not capable of being geo-processed by the google map.

The following table provides several examples to demonstrate the block translation process:

Street Number
Block Translation
0 - 99 0 Block
100 - 199 100 Block
1000 - 1099 1000 Block
12000 - 12099 12000 Block
  • Incident Identifier: Electronically generated by the Police Department's computer system, this number catalogues the incident reported to the Police Department and can be utilized by ACCPD personnel to retrieve the full details of the incident.
  • Offense Date: This is the earliest date as reported by the victim that the event could have occurred. For instance, a hypothetical victim may have left town on July 4th and returned on July 8th to find his home burglarized. The incident report in such a situation would have an offense date of July 4th and a report date of July 8th --the burglary likely occurred sometime between the two dates.

How can I use the data from CrimeReports.com in support of community safety goals? Data from CrimeReports.com can be reviewed and used to improve community safety. CrimeReports.com data is appropriate to consider and discuss as part of coordinated crime prevention initiatives. Members of the community are encouraged to continue partnering and problem-solving with the ACCPD while using CrimeReports.com data toward shared police-community goals.

Is every criminal incident type included in CrimeReports.com? Not every criminal incident type is included in CrimeReports.com. See the explanation above for further details.

How often is data updated in CrimeReports.com? CrimeReports.com data is updated automatically once per day and contains the most recent 6-months of data online; however, the most recent criminal incidents may not appear until several business days after they are reported. This delay is a function of the clerical processing that must be conducted by records personnel at ACCPD before reports are input into the RMS and posted to CrimeReports.com.

If I find an event and have additional information to provide to the police, what do I do? Information provided within CrimeReports.com is intended for the expressed purpose of educating the public on criminal activity in Athens-Clarke County. Beyond that intended outcome, the Police Department is hoping to enhance our partnerships with the community and is asking the public to provide ACCPD with any information that would assist in resolving crimes. Follow-up information should be directed to ACCPD by calling 706-613-3330. Information of an emergency nature should be telephoned to the department's 911 emergency dispatch center.

Under no circumstances should any member of the public take any action on their own behalf as it relates to the information provided on this website, other than notifying ACCPD with information they wish to share.
