| (L-R):C.O. Leigh Martin, Chief Joseph H. Lumpkin, Sr., and Sergeant
Janice Richardson |
The Police Department announces the sworn and civilian
employees of the year for 2002.
The sworn Employee of the Year 2002 was Sergeant Janice Richardson.
She was selected for her investigation of the sexual assault of a seven-year
old female. The victim sustained serious injuries that required immediate
surgery. Because the victim's story did not match the evidence, she
persistently investigated this case until she determined a person known
to the victim had threatened further harm if she told the truth. The
perpetrator was arrested and charged accordingly. Without her relentless
pursuit, this case would not have been solved.
Communications Officer Leigh Martin was selected as the Civilian Employee
of the Year 2002. On October 30 C/O Martin received a call from a hysterical
female who spoke very little English. The victim had been in an automobile
accident and her vehicle was off the roadway somewhere on Timothy Road.
She put her nine-year old son on the phone. Although he was upset, C/O
Martin was able to calm him enough to lead police and fire personnel
to their location. Her actions displayed a professional and caring attitude,
which resulted in a positive outcome.
Each recipient was presented with a plaque.
