Athens, 08 March 2001 -- Officers Ty Carrell and Fabian Jones were selected Sworn Employees of the Quarter for October-November-December 2000. The officers were dispatched to a fire at an apartment complex on Sunset Dr. Upon arrival, they learned two elderly persons were still in the burning section of the apartment. Both entered the apartment and located the residents, one of whom was bedridden and on life support. The officers led and carried the residents to safety. After the rescue, the officers continued to evacuate residents from the other apartments. They remained on the scene in frigid weather to maintain crowd control.

The civilian Employee of the Quarter was Communications Officer Karen Waldrop. CO Waldrop was selected for her handling of a call from a female who was being followed by an unknown male who had blocked her car and pointed a gun at her. As she kept the victim on the telephone, CO Waldrop obtained crucial information that enabled officers to locate and arrest the male. It was later determined this male was a serial rapist.

SPO Don Eckert was honored as the Sworn Employee of the Year for 2000. SPO Eckert was the employee of the third quarter. He made numerous arrests for burglary, drugs, traffic charges, entering auto and theft by receiving as well as for misdemeanors. He also performed CPR on an infant until EMS arrived.

Communications Officer Suzanne Adler, employee of the first quarter of 2000, was honored as Civilian Employee of the Year 2000 for her handling of a 911 call from a five year old whose mother had cut herself. CO Adler kept the child calm and talking on the telephone until police and EMS arrived.

Chief Joseph H. Lumpkin, Sr., presented each with a plaque and expressed appreciation for their dedication and hard work.
