New Athens-Clarke County Police Department Substations Open

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department opened two police substations that were approved by ACC voters in SPLOST 2000. One is located at 1060 Baxter Street and the other substation is at 385 Fairview Street. The following photograph illustrates the floor plans for both of these new substations.

The goals of the substations are to provide increased visibility in these areas, deter crime, and promote a proactive approach to community policing by optimizing contact between officers and community members. After extensive research, public hearings were held to determine the best locations. Using various criteria and analyzing "calls for service" data, it was determined these locations were the best possible sites.

The East Substation replaces a storefront office that was housed in an Athens Housing Authority housing unit. The property was donated by the AHA. It will provide offices for the Crime Prevention Unit, the Weed and Seed program, and Special Operations Unit. Weed and Seed is a federally funded program designed to "weed out" problems and "seed" the area with positive influences.

The West Substation will house the ACCPD Traffic Unit as well as clerical personnel.
