April 25, 2009

On April 25, 2009 at 12:25 PM Athens-Clarke County Police were dispatched to a shooting on Grady Avenue. Officers found three adult victims, all apparently killed by gun fire. Three other individuals were injured during the incident. The shooter, who fled the scene before officers arrived, is identified as George Zinkhan, of a Bogart, Georgia address. George Zinkhan is a white male, 56 years old. He was last seen driving a 2005 Red Jeep Liberty, Georgia Tag AIX 1376.

The three victims killed in the shooting have been positively identified as Thomas Tanner, 40 of Winterville, Marie Bruce, 47, of Bogart and Ben Teague, 63, of Athens.

Attached is an updated photograph of the suspect, George Zinkhan, as well as a photo depicting the vehicle that the suspect was last seen driving. Law enforcement officials still request anyone with information regarding the location of George Zinkhan or the 2005 red Jeep Liberty Georgia Tag AIX 1376 to contact the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, or dial 911.

 

The Jeep Liberty that Mr Zinkhan was last seen driving resembles the one below.

Overnight in northwestern Clarke County, Athens-Clarke police located the vehicle belonging to George Zinkhan, the former UGA professor wanted in the killing of 3 people.

Until he is located by police, as stated previously, please continue to use caution. Do not call 911 unless there is an emergency or you have sighted Zinkhan.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department along with Federal and State Agencies are continuing to search an area off of Cleveland Rd near the Jackson County line in regards to George Zinkhan. The 2005 Jeep Liberty that Zinkhan was last seen in on April 25, 2009, was discovered last night and recovered this morning. An extensive evidentiary search of the area continues.

Until Zinkhan is located by law enforcement, as stated previously, please continue to use caution. Do not call 911 unless there is an emergency or you have sighted Zinkhan.

GBI PIO John Bankhead completed a media briefing at 1345 hours. Further information will be sent out and posted to ACCPD.org as it becomes available.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department along with Federal and State Agencies have continued to search an area off of Cleveland Rd near the Jackson County line with cadeaver dogs in regards to George Zinkhan. The searched area had been expanded from where Zinkhan's vehicle was recovered on May 1, 2009. This morning an emergency K9 response team found a concealed body during their extensive evidentiary search of that area. The concealed body was found approximately 1.3 miles from where Zinghan's vehicle had been recovered.

The recovered body will be transported to the GBI State Crime Laboratory for positive identification. Until Zinkhan is located by law enforcement, as stated previously, please continue to use caution. Do not call 911 unless there is an emergency or you have sighted Zinkhan.

At 1500 hours today law enforcement agencies will hold a media conference at the Athens-Clarke County's West Precinct, 3700 Atlanta Hwy Athens, Georgia 30606. Further information will be sent out and posted to ACCPD.org as it becomes available.

 

ACCPD SPECIAL MEDIA RELEASE--050909 UPDATE

The GBI State Crime laboratory has confirmed that the body found in the northwest section of Athens-Clarke County today is that of George Zinkhan. A concluding media conference and/or release will be scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, 2009.
