Wrecker Fees

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has recently fielded inquiries in regards to regulations upon what a wrecker service may charge when towing a vehicle per authority by request of a police officer. The following Athens-Clarke County ordinance governs this topic.

Sec. 6-15-6. Fees for standard duty wrecker service on police nonconsensual call lists.

The fees for tows made pursuant to a police-initiated tow under this chapter for a standard duty wrecker service on police nonconsensual call lists shall not exceed the following:

(1) Towing fee: Standard duty wrecker service towing fee for all police nonconsensual tows, including weekdays, nights, weekends and holidays, shall be in an amount no greater than $85.00.

(2) Storage fee: There shall be a storage fee in an amount not greater than $10.00 per 24-hour increment or portion thereof for storage in secured lots.

(3) The wrecker service must be available to release vehicles Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at no additional charge.

(4) After business hours release fee: The wrecker service may at its own discretion release a vehicle after the above business hours and shall be entitled to an "after business hours release fee" in an amount no greater than $35.00.

The exact figures mentioned in the above limits are to represent maximum prices that may be charged by a wrecker service; however, this does not mean that this is the amount that must be charged. Wrecker services that charge the above amounts choose to do so on their own will and have the option of charging any amount up to the maximums listed above.
